You know that saying, ‘if a tree falls in a forest and there’s no one to hear it, does it make a sound?’ Well if you build a business and don’t shout about it, do all the people you want to know get to hear about it?
Build it and they will come. Another well used phrase, bordering on the cliché. Does anyone actually believe it?
Recently I’ve been told, that there’s no such thing as a ‘USP’ a ‘Unique Selling Point.’ Whatever you’re doing, someone’s already doing it. It did take me by surprise a little and made me feel a bit panicky. If nothing I’m doing in my business is unique, then how do I get people to choose me over others? And how do other businesses become first choice?
One way is to make sure that your business, your brand, is seen in more places than your competitor’s. So, when a potential customer is at the buying stage, your company name comes to mind and they will include you in their list of people to reach out to.
Another way, is to have other people say how great your brand or product is. Now, unlike an advert, it’s not you saying ‘look how fab I am’, it’s someone else. Much more credible and powerful.
PR can get you both of these.
Coverage in the media, reaching thousands and hundreds of thousands of readers, listeners or viewers gets your brand out there and gets potential customers noticing you.
And when the media writes or talks about you, it’s someone else saying how great you are and why. But not just ‘someone’ else - media consumed and trusted by many. So very powerful.
PR done right is a no brainer. Why wouldn’t you do it?
